Crafting Luxury Turbans and Hijabs: A Journey of Innovation and Style
I embarked on the journey of designing luxury turbans and hijabs in 2013, inspired by a conversation with Amy from the millinery department of Harrods. Amy shared the increasing demand for pre-tied hijab styles. From the sophisticated Middle Eastern clientele, sparking the inception of a captivating range.
The Art of Sculpting: Form and Fabrics
My design philosophy revolves around innovation, wearability, and timeless style. Each piece is meticulously crafted to complement and enhance the wearer’s appearance without overpowering. The hijab concept resonated with me, offering an opportunity to sculpt exquisite forms using the finest silks and classic fabrics.
By cutting the fabric on the bias, I discovered a way to create natural pleats and fluidity, ensuring a comfortable fit for various head sizes and shapes. The fabric’s true bias allowed for beautiful drapes and movement, providing a canvas for my creative vision.
Inspirations from the Past: Traditional Turbans with a Modern Twist
In my quest for hijab shapes and styles, I delved into the history of women who adorned traditional turbans with grace and dignity. From the alluring Hollywood stars of the early 20th century to the global style icon, Sheika Moza, I found inspiration in their timeless elegance.
The Inaugural Creation: Kirsty Turban
The first hijab style I designed was a timeless classic – a sleek black slub-free dupion silk. This lightweight yet rigid fabric maintained its form perfectly. The central front loop, accompanied by a folded brim, added flattering width to the face. Softly gathered sides created volume and elegance, a design feature echoed in the front loop. The Kirsty turban became an instant hit, available in various colourways and fabrics, occasionally embellished with pearls or Swarovski crystals. Notably, the luxury pleated sequin version graced the pages of Vogue Arabia, adorning the lovely Jordan Dunn.
Evolution in Style: Aisha Takes Center Stage
As with all things, hijab styles evolve. The Kirsty turban remained a bestseller until the introduction of the Aisha in 2018, marking a new chapter in our design journey.
